Encapsulated and assessed "Authentic" by PSA (95439471), one of fewer than 50 copies validated across all levels by that company. This enticing collectible—documenting its singular subject's 1910 through 1915 tenure with the Cleveland Naps—celebrates an enduringly mythological figure. The legend of Joe Jackson is alive and vigorous in the card collecting hobby, and the case for his enshrinement at Cooperstown continues to be pressed by a legion of advocates. "Shoeless Joe" was an exceptional player, but his banishment from the game made the athlete even larger than life. The offered card was produced several years before Commissioner Landis found Jackson and the other "Black Sox" guilty-as-charged of throwing the 1919 World Series. Unfortunately for modern collectors, few vintage cards of Joe Jackson were produced, and virtually all are discouragingly expensive. This 1914 Cracker Jack card, depicting the iconic batsman mid-swing, concedes obvious faults, most notably a missing chunk of material in the lower-edge margin. (It can perhaps be credibly argued that this discrepancy speaks to the item's unique history, potentially adding a touch of mystique.) The piece's image of Jackson, which can be legitimately characterized as "lifelike," is well-focused and boasts strong colors. The delicate cards from this release are generally found poorly cut or with significant damage due to their relatively fragile paper stock; this specimen carries its share of honest wear with little disruption to the player likeness, and its routine product staining is milder than often-seen levels. A strongly printed reverse side contributes enhancement to the still-desirable presentation quality exhibited by this compelling memento. A commendable, memorable copy of a timeless tribute to the storied great, and a cornerstone heirloom of the legendary, eventual "Black Sox" player's career.
